Common Exhaust Problems in Cars

When it comes to the exhaust system, most drivers don’t know how it works let alone the signs of an exhaust problem. The exhaust system is responsible for moving hazardous engine byproducts, transforming them, and releasing them into the environment. It comprises a series of pipes, sensors, gaskets, and more. The operation can be very taxing; however, it is crucial to keep your car running in a safe manner.

Exhaust systems are meant to last a long time, and they require little maintenance when compared to other systems in your car. Depending on where you live and how old your vehicle is, your state may require smog checks to monitor your vehicle’s emissions. This test often reveals when something is wrong with the exhaust system.

Rust

Most of the exhaust system, including the catalytic converter and muffler, is made of metal making them very prone to rust. Rust can be very dangerous for your vehicle, especially when found in the exhaust system. When left long enough, it can eat away the exhaust’s metallic components and develop holes.

Exhaust Leaks

Leaks are the next common problems that can go wrong with your exhaust. When talking about exhaust leaks, they are not liquid but gas. Exhaust leaks can be extremely dangerous and difficult to detect, which is why they should be checked by vehicle professionals.

Damaged Exhaust Manifold Gasket

The exhaust manifold gasket is intended to divide the exhaust manifold and the cylinder head. You might hear hissing or tapping sounds when the gasket goes wrong. If you suspect a problem with the manifold gasket, please bring your car to TLS Motorworks.

Dangling Brackets

When the exhaust brackets come loose, they hang lower than usual and can sometimes graze the ground. If this is the case, you should have it fixed soon to avoid hurting yourself or others.

Clogged Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter is in charge of converting dangerous exhaust fumes into less harmful gasses. Sometimes, the catalytic converter can get clogged and emit a rotten egg smell. If you suspect a defect in your catalytic converter, please do not delay bringing your car to TLS Motorworks.

Waiting too long to repair your exhaust system can trigger your check engine light, cause extensive damage, and put you and your vehicle in danger. If you are dealing with any of these exhaust problems above, please call or swing by TLS Motorworks today.
